Welcome to Silk Hope. Silk Hope in Chatham County NC is a farm community centered around a community school, a volunteer fire department, several country churches and many historical farmsteads. It is evolving into the country home of many who work in Chapel Hill, RTP and Cary. The oral history says the name came from an enterprise to create a silk industry in early 1800's. No signs remain of the silk ambitions, nor the cotton gin that once stood at the Silk Hope cross roads. Yet, the long term community residents come together each labor day to celebrate their heritage at the Silk Hope Old Fashion Farmers Day. New neighbors are welcome; especially those who want to become an active part of the community. Though Silk Hope is only 20 minutes from Chapel Hill by way of Chicken Bridge road (where it has become a tradition to line the bridge with Jackolanterns each Halloween), the community could hardly be further away from high tech culture of the Triangle. It is well worth a visit. You may choose to stay a while.

Passive Solar Heating

Two primary elements of passive solar heating are required:

There are three approaches to passive systems - direct gain, indirect gain, and isolated gain. The goal of all passive solar heating systems is to capture the sun's heat within the building's elements and release that heat during periods when the sun is not shining. At the same time that the building's elements (or materials) is absorbing heat for later use, solar heat is available for keeping the space comfortable (not overheated).

Passive solar energy means that mechanical means are not employed to utilize solar energy. Passive Solar Guidelines: greenbuilder.com A Solar Energy Tip from Deer Mountain just 6 miles from Carrboro|Chapel Hill.
