COMMUNITY PROFILE: Antique Capital
of the South
With more than 100
18th- and 19th-century homes and other buildings, Hillsborough was once
the Colonial capital of North Carolina and has been dubbed the Antique
Capital of North Carolina. Historic Hillsborough offers carriage rides
and tours by guides dressed in period costume, as well as Native
American, Revolutionary and Civil War artifacts. In fact, the local
Occoneechee-Saponi tribe has constructed an authentic replica of their
native village here.
Hillsborough is surrounded by three privately owned Economic Development
Districts. These districts include more than 2,500 acres strategically
located along Interstates 85 and 40. These pre-zoned sites allow a wide
range of permitted uses, including light industrial , warehouse/
distribution, flex space, office, retail or business services.
Housing choices range from small mill homes to large historic homes in
town, with prices ranging less than $100,000 to more than $500,000. |

ATTRACTIONS
Hillsborough Hog Day
is held in June each year. In addition to a cook-off featuring more than 9,000
pounds of barbecue, there are carnival-style rides and games, a petting zoo and
live entertainment.
Occaneechi
Indian Village
is a reconstructed 17th-century Occaneechi village on the banks of
Eno River, near where the tribe had an actual village 300 years ago.
Occoneechee Mountain Park,
recently added to the state park service, boasts the highest elevation point
this side of the N.C. Carolina mountains. A walking trail winds across the
ridges of the Eno River, up and around the mountain to a newly built observation
deck at the mountain’s highest peak.
The
Chamber of Commerce helped to get the
Town Park
built on the banks of the Eno River, where it will continue to be a work in
progress.
Ayr Mount
is an 1815 Federal-era plantation house, restored and furnished
with period antiques and fine art. The estate includes the one mile long Poet's
Walk.
The Shops at
Daniel Boone
is a pioneer-style village with nearly 30 antique stores, a
blacksmith shop, and other businesses.
Triangle Sportsplex,
an ice-skating rink, is used periodically by the Carolina Hurricanes as a
practice facility. It hosts children league hockey games and puts on an annual
production of the Nutcracker.
